Using a 2 x 4 to support the tower
Since steel towers are very heavy, it takes a group effort to raise them. The first few feet are the most difficult since you must start by lifting half the weight of the tower. As the angle increases toward vertical, a greater percentage of the weight is shifted to the base and lifting becomes easier. At vertical, 100% of the weight is shifted to the base. A gin pole is used as a temporary support during the most difficult part of the lifting.
